Bullies: Their Making and Unmaking by Dr. Gordon Neufeld (4 week series)

Tues 7:00pm – 8:30pm PST OR Thurs 10:00am – 11:30am PST

  • Session 1 (January 12th or 14th): Introduction
  • Session 2 (January 19th or 21st): The Bully’s Vulnerability Problem
  • Session 3 (January 26th or 28th): The Bully’s Attachment Problem
  • Session 4 (February 2nd or 4th): Challenges in the Unmaking of Bullies

Once we understand how bullies are made, our attempts to unmake them can be truly effective and long-lasting. Most prevailing approaches to this problem assume that bullying is either learned behaviour or the result of failure to acquire social skills. In contrast, Dr. Neufeld dissects the bully syndrome to reveal its deep instinctive roots in the dynamics of attachment and vulnerability. Dr. Neufeld sheds light on this dark side of human nature. This refreshing developmental analysis of bullies reveals instinctive roots embedded in the dynamics of attachment and the flight from vulnerability. The implications for intervention and treatment are profound.

Alpha Children: Reclaiming Our Rightful Place in Their Lives by Dr. Gordon Neufeld (4 week series)

Tues 7:00pm – 8:30pm PST OR Thurs 10:00am – 11:30am PST

  • Session 1 (February 16th or 18th): Making Sense of Alpha
  • Session 2 (February 23rd or 25th): The Many Faces of Alpha
  • Session 3 (March 2nd or 4th): The Causes and Consequences of an Alpha Complex
  • Session 4 (March 9th or 11th): Taming an Alpha Complex

A growing number of children and youth are presenting as demanding, prescriptive, bossy and controlling. Alpha children can be challenging to manage and, by their nature, are more likely to present with troubling behaviour. This is making the child-adult dance much more difficult than it used to be or needs to be, despite the plethora of advice-giving and strategies available today. Internationally renowned developmental psychologist Dr. Neufeld uncovers the surprising roots of the alpha complex and in doing so, opens the doors for lasting change. This course is designed for all those involved in raising, teaching and working with children.

This HBO documentary, directed by Lauren Greenfield, follows four young women dealing with anorexia and bulimia at a strict treatment facility in Florida where they temporarily live. As the camera follows them, Shelly, Polly, Brittany and Alisa, ranging in age from 15 to 30 years old, have group therapy sessions, weigh-ins and meals. The women discuss the emotional and psychological issues tied to their body-image problems, as each struggles to fight the urge to lose more weight.

"Imagine a world where every child's hurt, every child's cry and every child's need is met by loving adults."
