Mandatory Training for Foster Parents

PRIDE Pre-Service Training (previously Pre-Service Orientation)

The Parent Resources for Information Development and Education (PRIDE) Pre-Service Training is required for all new prospective caregivers. PRIDE Pre-Service is 35 hours of online training, facilitated by a group of specialized virtual facilitators, and is completed over a 12-week period. (STFC staff have audited this training and are able to discuss contents and questions with potential and current foster parents.)

Your Resource Social Worker will register you for the training.


PRIDE In-Service Training (previously 53 Hour Education Program)

Caregivers provide an invaluable service to children, youth, and families requiring specialized skills, education, and support. This on-line training, designed to meet their unique needs and offer focused skills training, is free of charge and takes about 50-55 hours to complete. All foster parents are required to complete the BC PRIDE In-Service Training within two years of becoming approved. The Pride In-Service curriculum consists of 11 modules and covers various topics including Assessing Self-Esteem, Communicating with Youth & Children, Promoting Positive Behaviour & Self-Responsibility, Sexuality & Sexual Abuse, Child/Birth Family Ties, Teamwork Skills, Cultural Competence, Lifebooks, Permanency Planning & Goals, Supporting Transitions, Foster Parent Adoption, Managing Change in Your Family, Caring for Indigenous Children, and Supporting Open and Safe Dialogue about Substance Use and Abuse/ Neglect Allegations.

Your Resource Social Worker will register you for the training.

Additional Training

Additional training is offered in our communities on an on-going basis throughout the year and is determined by the unique needs of each community. Please contact your Network Facilitator to discuss. The topics covered may include some of the following:

  • Safe Babies
  • Privacy Training
  • Working with Natural Families
  • Transitioning Youth to Independence
  • Grief & Loss
  • Trauma Training
  • Sexual Health for Children with Support Needs
  • Internet Safety
