“Don’t work with me…walk with me.”
This is a quote from a First Nations elder whose name I do not know, but the wisdom of this simple statement has had a direct impact on me.
I began working in this field in 1991 as a Foster Parent and for 10 years had many children, youth and their families teach me some very valuable lessons. Compassion, empathy, love (using my heart) – those are the foundations of the work, but I also learned from the many social workers that I needed to understand my role and responsibilities (using my brain) within the system. It takes both the heart and the brain to be in balance. And, of course, I quickly realized that I needed to build my skills so that I might respond in a helpful way to the many challenges that children and their families face on a daily basis.
In my work today, I draw on what I’ve learned and truly enjoy supporting the people who open their hearts and their homes to children and youth in need of a safe place to stay. I am adopting the attitude of “don’t work with me… walk with me” as I support Foster Parents in their journey. As well, I strive to ensure that training is not just adequate, but meaningful and relevant so that Foster Parents may not only learn new skills but also build on the many skills they already have.
There is something about this work that has become a part of me and defines who I am. I am here to help, and if what I offer is relevant – then please take me up on it!
